          Today’s topic: The Outsiders

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton tells the story of a group of friends in the lower class known as greasers. Particularly

Pony boy Curtis and his friends. Being broke isn’t their only problem, they have to deal with the viscous upper class rich kids known as socials or socs for short. The socs idea of a good time is beating up greasers like Pony boy. Of course, like anyone the greasers aren’t gonna take it, so they fight back. This is the main rivalry between them. One night Pony boy, Johnny, and Dally (Pony’s friends) go to the movies, and they end up sitting behind two girls (they were alone because their soc boyfriends were drinking and they didn’t like it) both were socs. Dally was being very rude (Dally is a troublemaker) to the girls and Johnny nervously (Johnny is very shy and has a history of being abused) told Dally to leave them alone. Dally left and the girls asked Pony and Johnny to sit with them and they did. Just then a socs voice says, “Hey what are two fine ladies like you gals doin with greasers like them”, Pony and Johnny turned around to see their friend two-bit Matthews start laughing at the expressions on their faces (he is the jokester). Fast forward, and Pony and Johnny are walking the girls home when all of a sudden their soc boyfriends pull up in a blue mustang, and they get out and an argument ensues. The girls agree to go with their boyfriends as long as they don’t fight. Fast forward some more and Johnny and Pony boy are at the park late at night when the same blue mustang drives around the park. The two angry and drunk (they were angry at Pony boy and Johnny for picking up their girls) socs from earlier stepped out of the car with some of their buddies, Johnny and Pony looked at the socs drunken and enraged and then chaos ensued. You will need to read the book to find out the ending!!
